runDisney Race Weekend: The Gear for the People Who Actually Earn the Medal

June 29, 2026

The inaugural Star Wars 'The Dark Side' half-marathon medal — Walt Disney World, April 17, 2016

Full confession before we start: that is the inaugural Star Wars “The Dark Side” half-marathon medal hanging on my wall, and I did not run a single step for it. I won it in an online auction — at 2 a.m., flat on my back with the flu and a head full of flu medication, making decisions no healthy person would make. (We’ve since added a household rule: never online-auction at 2 a.m. on cold medicine.) So I am the last person who should lecture anyone on running 13.1 miles through a Disney park at dawn.

What I can do is tell you what goes in the bag, because a runDisney weekend is its own animal: a 3 a.m. wake-up, a bus by 4, an hour or two standing in a corral in the dark, and then humid Florida miles with character-photo stops along the way. The folks who actually earn one of these medals all carry roughly the same small kit, and most of them learned it the hard way. If you’re chasing yours, here’s the gear that keeps a tiny problem at mile 3 from wrecking mile 11.

Anti-chafe balm — the one nobody skips twice

This is the runner’s first commandment, and a humid Disney course punishes anyone who forgets it. A swipe of anti-chafe balm before the corral — inner thighs, underarms, anywhere a seam sits, and the spots the race shirt rubs — is the difference between finishing comfortable and finishing raw. Florida sweat makes everything worse, so go thicker than you think you need.

Blister bandages — for the hot spot at mile 4

You feel it before you see it, somewhere in the first few miles, and a long humid race turns a hot spot into a blister fast. Hydrocolloid blister bandages tucked in your belt go on the moment you feel one, cushion it, and stay put through sweat so you keep your pace instead of limping the back half. A couple in the pocket is cheap insurance over 13 miles.

Electrolyte packets — the humidity drains you faster than you plan for

The on-course stops help, but Florida heat pulls electrolytes out of you faster than water alone can replace — and that’s where cramps and the wall come from. A stick pack of electrolytes in your handheld, sipped across the race, keeps your legs under you to the finish. Stash a spare for the long corral wait before the gun, too.

A collapsible bottle — for the corral and the course

The hours between the bus and the start are dead time in the dark, and you want water in hand without lugging a hard bottle the whole way. A collapsible bottle packs flat in a belt, fills at the staging areas, and rides easy between the official water stops when they’re a mile apart. It’s the small thing that keeps you topped off start to finish.

A cooling towel — for the finish-line heat and the walk back

By the time the sun is up the Florida heat is on, and the long, slow walk back to the bus after the medal is its own ordeal. A cooling towel soaked at a fountain and snapped cold across your neck pulls your core temperature down fast right when you need it. Light, cheap, and it lives in the gear-check bag.

A crossbody phone lanyard — for the course photos without the fumble

Half the point of a runDisney race is stopping for character photos and filming the parks at dawn, and digging your phone out of a sweaty belt every time kills your pace. A crossbody phone lanyard keeps it on your chest, secure and one-grab ready, so you catch the castle at sunrise without breaking stride or dropping it on the pavement.

So that’s the kit — from someone who admires these medals enough to buy one off the internet at 2 a.m. The medal is the reason you signed up, and crossing that finish line through a Disney park at dawn earns it in a way an auction never will. Pack the chafe and blister basics, keep the electrolytes coming, and enjoy the most fun 13.1 miles you’ll run all year. You’ll have earned the wall space.
