The Disney Resort Pool Day Is the Move Nobody Plans — Here's What We Bring
July 3, 2026
We used to treat every day of a Disney trip like it had to be a park day. Rope drop, close the place down, do it again tomorrow. By day four nobody was having fun — we were just tired people standing in line. The fix that saved our trips was the most boring thing imaginable: a down day. We sleep in, skip the parks entirely, and spend the afternoon at the resort pool with cold drinks and zero agenda. It costs nothing, it resets everybody, and the park days after it are noticeably better. If you’d rather just check it off, grab the free printable packing checklist below.
1. Insulated Can Cooler — the drink that stays cold past noon
This is the one piece of gear that makes a resort pool day feel like a vacation instead of a chore. You drop a can into the insulated cooler, set it on the table by your lounger, and an hour later it’s still cold — no sweating ring, no lukewarm last sip. We bring two so neither of us has to get up. On a hot Florida afternoon, the difference between a cold drink and a warm one is the difference between staying put and packing it in early.
2. Cooling Towel — instant relief when the sun finds your chair
The shade moves, the sun finds you, and suddenly the lounger you fought for feels like a frying pan. Soak one of these in cold water, snap it a few times, and drape it across the back of your neck. The relief is immediate and lasts a surprisingly long time. We keep one each in the pool bag and re-soak them at the drinking fountain whenever they warm up.
3. Spray Sunscreen SPF 70 — the reapply you’ll actually do
We learned this the hard way: the sunscreen you reapply is the only sunscreen that works, and nobody reapplies the lotion kind by the pool. The spray covers arms, legs, and shoulders in about ten seconds, even on wet skin. It’s sweat and water resistant, so a quick dip doesn’t wipe out the whole effort. Hit everyone before lunch, hit them again mid-afternoon, done.
4. Collapsible Water Bottle — hydrate between dips without buying $6 water
Pool days dehydrate you faster than you notice because you’re in the water and don’t feel the sweat. This bottle packs flat in the bag on the way out and fills up free at any resort fountain. We refill ours a few times across an afternoon and skip the gift-shop water entirely. Cold water between drinks is also what keeps a pool day from turning into a headache by dinner.
5. SPF 50 Lip Balm — the spot everyone forgets
Lips burn fast poolside, and they’re the one place the spray sunscreen never reaches. The first time Brigitte’s lips burned on a pool day she was miserable for two days of the trip. Now this lives in the pool bag and we both swipe it on a couple times an afternoon. Tiny thing, easy to skip, genuinely ruins a trip if you do.
6. Crossbody Phone Lanyard — your phone stays on you, not in the splash zone
The loungers around a resort pool are close together and constantly damp. Leave your phone on the little table and it’s one stray cannonball away from a bad day. The lanyard keeps it across your body so you can wander to the bar, watch the kids in the water, or grab a snack without leaving it behind or worrying about it.
A resort pool day won’t show up on anyone’s must-do list, and that’s exactly why it works — it’s the breather that makes the rest of the trip enjoyable. Pack a few small things, expect nothing from the afternoon, and let everyone recover. You’ll feel the difference the next morning.
