The Disney World Packing List (from people who go too often)

Most Disney World packing lists are a hundred items long and forget the five that actually matter. This is the opposite. Every item here earns its spot by fixing a specific way a park day goes sideways — the Florida heat, the afternoon downpour, the dead phone at lunch, the feet that quit on day two. Pack these and you’ve covered the problems first-timers learn the hard way.

The heat (this is the one that gets people)

Central Florida in the parks is hot, humid, and relentless — you’re outside for twelve hours with no shade in line. Handle the heat and half your day improves on its own.

• Insulated water bottle. Park water runs $6 a pop and dehydration sneaks up fast. Fill at the free fountains, stay cold for hours, spend nothing.
• Electrolyte packets. Water alone doesn’t cut it when you’re sweating all day. A stick pack heads off the 3 p.m. heat headache that ends a lot of afternoons early.
• Hands-free neck fan. You spend a huge share of the day standing still in humid air. Moving air with your hands free is the single biggest comfort upgrade in summer.
• Spray sunscreen. Twelve hours of Florida sun. A sweat-resistant spray covers arms, ears, and necks in seconds — so you actually reapply instead of skipping it.

The rain

Most afternoons get a shower, and the gift-shop poncho is wildly overpriced for what it is.

• Packable rain poncho. Lives in your bag, weighs nothing, saves you from paying tourist rates in a downpour every single time.

The dead phone

Your phone is your ticket, your ride reservations, and your camera — and it dies by noon.

• Portable charger. Bring your own power so you’re not chained to a wall outlet at lunch. (At Disney specifically, the swap-kiosk style chargers let you trade a dead one for a fresh one mid-day.)

The feet (day two is the test)

You’ll walk more than ten miles a day without noticing. The damage shows up on day two.

• Anti-chafe balm. A morning swipe on thighs and feet is the difference between an easy day two and limping back to the resort.
• Hydrocolloid blister bandages. They stay put through sweat and stop a hot spot before it ends your day. Toss a few in the bag and forget them until you need them.

The bag itself

• Park belt bag. Hands-free, fits most ride restrictions, keeps your phone and charger in front of you in crowds. The bag most regulars settle on.
• Compression packing cubes. A week of sweaty park outfits plus whatever you bought never fits on the way home. Cubes squeeze it down and turn the repack into thirty seconds.

If you’ve got little ones

• Kids’ wrist link. Crowds and excited kids are a tough mix. A soft wrist link keeps them close through park-hopping and parades.
• Clip-on stroller fan. The heat hits little ones first, and a hot kid is a done kid. A bendable fan buys you the extra hours that save the afternoon.
