Disney World First-Timer Mistakes: 8 Things We Wish We'd Packed
June 23, 2026
Our first Disney World trip taught us most of this the expensive way. Not the big stuff — we’d read the ride guides and booked the dining. It was the small, boring things we didn’t pack that chipped away at the days: the $6 water, the noon phone death, the sunburn by lunch. None of it ruined the trip. All of it was avoidable. Here are the eight we wish we’d thrown in the bag, in roughly the order they bit us.
If you’d rather just check it off, grab the free printable packing checklist below.
1. A portable charger — the phone died at lunch
Your phone is your park ticket, your ride reservations, and your camera, which means it’s working all day and flat by noon. We spent an hour of day one hunting for an outlet instead of riding anything. A charger in the bag fixes it outright. At Disney specifically, the swap-kiosk chargers let you trade a dead one for a full one mid-day, so you’re never tethered to a wall.
2. An insulated water bottle — we paid $6 a bottle for water
Florida heat dehydrates you faster than you’d guess, and bottled water in the parks is priced like you have no choice. You do: the quick-service counters give out free ice water, and the fountains are everywhere. Fill an insulated bottle in the morning and it’s still cold at 3 p.m. This one pays for itself before lunch on day one.
3. A neck fan — we underestimated standing still in the humidity
It’s not the walking that gets you, it’s standing motionless in a queue in wet air. A hands-free neck fan moving air while you wait is the single biggest comfort upgrade we’ve found for a summer park day, and it kept the kids from melting down in line.
4. Spray sunscreen — sunburned by lunch on day one
Twelve hours outside with almost no shade. We brought a tube, hated rubbing it on in the heat, and skipped reapplying — and paid for it. A sweat-resistant spray covers arms, ears, and the back of your neck in seconds, which is the only reason you actually reapply instead of telling yourself you will.
5. A packable rain poncho — the afternoon downpour got us
Most afternoons get a shower, and it passes. What doesn’t pass is the gift-shop poncho price when you’re caught without one. A packable poncho weighs nothing, lives in the bag all trip, and saves you the tourist markup every single time it rains.
6. Electrolyte packets — the 3 p.m. heat headache
This is the sneaky one. We were drinking plenty of water and still hit a wall mid-afternoon — the drained, headachy slump that sends a lot of families back to the room early. Water alone doesn’t replace what you sweat out all day. A stick pack in the bottle heads it off and buys you the evening.
7. Anti-chafe balm — day two is the test
You’ll walk more than ten miles a day without noticing, and the damage doesn’t show up until day two. A morning swipe of anti-chafe balm on thighs and feet is the difference between an easy second day and limping to the bus. Boring, cheap, and the thing veterans never skip.
8. Blister bandages — a hot spot almost ended a day
Even good shoes turn on you at mile eight. Hydrocolloid blister bandages stay put through sweat and stop a hot spot before it becomes the thing you’re thinking about instead of the parks. Toss a few in the bag and forget they’re there until the moment you need one.
None of this is expensive, and none of it is exciting — which is exactly why first-timers leave it home and learn the hard way. Pack these eight and you’ve covered the problems that quietly wreck a day.

Fixes: Your phone dies by noon

Hydration Owala FreeSip Water Bottle
Fixes: Paying $6 for park water
Florida heat is no joke and bottled water adds up fast. Fill an insulated Owala at the free fountains and it stays cold for hours.
Heat Hands-Free Neck Fan
Fixes: Standing in lines in the humidity
A bladeless neck fan moves air while you wait in line with both hands free. The single best comfort upgrade for a summer park day.
Heat Spray Sunscreen SPF 70
Fixes: A sunburn by lunch
Florida sun is relentless and you are outside for twelve hours. A sweat- and water-resistant spray covers arms, necks, and ears in seconds without the greasy rub-in — so you actually reapply instead of skipping it.
Weather Frogg Toggs Rain Poncho
Fixes: Afternoon downpours, $20 park ponchos
Florida rain shows up most afternoons. A packable poncho lives in your bag and saves you from the overpriced gift-shop version every single time.
Hydration Electrolyte Powder Packets

Fixes: Chafing over 20,000 steps
You will walk farther than you think. A swipe of anti-chafe balm on thighs and feet in the morning is the difference between day two being fun or miserable.
Comfort Hydrocolloid Blister Bandages
Fixes: Sore feet by day two
Cushioned blister bandages stay put through sweat and stop a hot spot from ending your day. Toss a few in the bag and forget about them until you need them.
